Energy Australia is one of Australia's largest gas and electricity suppliers, supplying energy to over 1.5 million Australian homes and businesses.

In NSW, Energy Australia operates the electrical distribution network for Sydney, the Central Coast and Hunter region.

Improving efficiencies

Energy Australia is constantly reviewing ways to improve efficiencies and reduce costs. As is the case for many large utility companies, theft is an ongoing problem. With the high expense of replacing stolen equipment and the loss of productivity, the cost of theft can be high.

In 2005, Energy Australia made a decision to adopt DataDots in NSW as part of the company s security strategy.

As a security conscious organisation, Energy Australia wanted to improve security measures. We were drawn to this technology because it worked for both our office equipment and work tools in the depots and on work sites , said Luke White, Security OperationsEnergy Australia NSW.

Datadots to protect equipment

Datadots are easy to apply using pressure pack spray cans, nearly impossible to remove, smaller than a grain of sand and almost undetectable to the naked eye. Police use a UV light to read the data dots on stolen goods to identify the rightful owner.

Energy Australia has used DataDots as an efficient and cost effective property marking solution.

Equipment such as office computers, mobile phones, ladders, power tools and hand tools have all been sprayed with data dots that carry a unique laser-etched identification code or DNA belonging to Energy Australia.

Police warning signs are also erected at our depots and stickers are placed on all marked equipment.

Marking equipment in this way means our property can be easily identified and stolen goods returned when they are found, explained Mr White.

Reducing Theft

This is a new-age approach to security in our industry and the results to date are very encouraging with theft rates down. We have , had a 90 95% reduction in the theft of tools, plant equipment, laptops and computers. This has saved us thousands of dollars.

Datadots have proven to be a smart, efficient and cost effective way for us to reduce theft , added Mr. White.
